Here's a concise very right draft summary of our brain-to-Judeo-Christian inner self mappings so far, that still needs lots of double checking and tidying up:

• Prefrontal cortex → Heart/spirit (thought, will, executive control, deliberate judgment, renewal direction)
• Anterior cingulate + insula → Kidneys/kilyot (hidden depths, conscience, gut feelings, error awareness, moral testing)
• Ventral striatum/nucleus accumbens → Flesh (immediate reward pull, craving, short-term gratification, impulse)
• Basal ganglia → Mind (habit formation, ingrained patterns, action selection, renewable through repetition)

Genesis 2:7 NASB1995 Then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.

God takes the dust of the earth (earthly matter) and breathes into it the breath of life (ruach in Hebrew, so the same word for “spirit” that is used in Holy Spirit and the human’s spirit), and the man becomes a living “being" (nephesh). In plain biblical language, the nephesh is simply the whole, unified, living creature—which is why Scripture frequently refers to counting people as counting "souls" or describes a soul as something that can literally hunger, thirst, or die.
